Spring is springing

The redbuds and pear trees are blooming, and finally today we are getting some RAIN! Thank you, Lord!
The draft girls are starting to shed off already. This is Xena and Freda enjoying a spring day before the front came in this morning and brought cooler weather and the rain.

Beautiful Gypsy Horses

Bob helped out at the Gypsy Horse Registry of America show this past weekend at the Fort Worth Stock Show. He was the "gate man" who organized the handlers and horses before going into the ring.

The GHRA was founded by very good friends of ours and we are happy to see they are getting great promotional results for the breed.

Busy Weekend

What a gorgeous day, and we were too busy to enjoy it at home. Bob is helping our friends with the Gypsy Horse Show at the Ft. Worth Stock Show this weekend. We just love the look of these feathered beauties! Here are a few photos.

I can't wait to see more photos from the Saturday evening classes. The show is being run in conjunction with the Miniature Horse Show. I wish I could be there.

I had a judging assignment at a cat show in Brenham, which is a great little town in southern Texas. So we went in opposite directions from home.

I did get home in time to enjoy some sunshine. I let the ewes with lambs out to graze for a little bit. The babies nibbled on the grass and enjoyed hopping around for a little while. Since they don't live together they got to actually "meet and play" for the first time. Those ol' bossy moms were always breaking them up though.

Xena (Shire x Percheron) + Apollo (pure Friesian) = a dreamy baby!

With the help of UPS and Doc Edwards we hope we have a gorgeous baby next spring!

This was our first experience with artificial insemination for our horses.

Then we got the bright idea to see what will happen when you breed a miniature to a draft horse... Batman + Freda?

We will see next April!

Spring has sprung and the horses are getting slick...

The draft girls have really slicked off, seems the bigger the horse, the faster they shed. Bob took lots of great photos while I was in New Braunfels judging a cat show. Freda's dun coat was sparkling in the sunshine today.
And look at Xena's dapples! Must be that secret recipe Bob fixes them!

Even our quarter horse, Goldie is more "gold" this spring, and she will soon be a new mom.

What a beautiful afternoon, Bob even started the lawnmower for me and I did my first mowing of the year!

The draft girls are now living happily together, here is a photo of them enjoying the sun.

Speaking of sharing....

Our two draft mares got to meet each other this past weekend. Xena is the black one and Freda is the bay dun. They got along pretty good, even at the hay rack.

Another Draft Horse at Unicorner

Well, it appears you can't have just one draft horse either. We added Fredina to the farm this past week. She is a dun Clydesdale cross, she is probably half Quarter Horse. She isn't as big as Xena, but we think she is beautiful.

Here she is with Bob and Inky looking quite contented. We will call her Freida, since Dina is too close to Xena. We haven't introduced the two yet, that should be interesting.

Lone Star meets Xena

We let our miniature horse, Lone Star meet Xena. Star is actually a larger mini, but he sure looks small next to Xena. As you can see, he thinks she's BBB, big, black and beautiful and nickered sweet nothings to her.

Star is 23 years old! He's starting to show his age a little, getting a little gray around the temples, but we think it makes him look distinguished.

Goldie meets Xena

Well, we tried introducing Xena to our palomino mare, Goldie in hopes they could live together.

We thought Xena might be lonely, though she doesn't seem to be. And Goldie apparently likes living with the minis better.

Unicorner's New Gentle Giant

This is Xena, our newest horse... she is 18 hands tall, weighs about 2200 lbs. and is a Shire-Percheron cross. Xena is the fulfillment of Bob's dream to own a draft horse.
